That’s a huge concentration of residents in a suburb that was previously California bungalows and interwar brick homes on standard blocks. Away from Pentridge, the traditional housing remains: The Grove is still Coburg’s best residential street with large period homes, and the side streets off Sydney Road have a mix of weatherboard, brick veneer, and an increasing number of townhouse subdivisions. East of Sydney Road near Elizabeth Street, the Coburg Hill estate on the former Kodak site has added contemporary homes for about 1,000 people.
