Living in St Kilda West
Quiet residential pocket with period homes and some newer bayside apartments. Close to the beach and Albert Park Lake.
St Kilda West is half a square kilometre of residential streets between Albert Park and St Kilda, nearly all houses. Mary Street is the premium address with wide tree-lined avenues and grand period homes. Cowderoy Street has Art Deco buildings from the 1930s and 40s. The only real apartment density is along Beaconsfield Parade and Canterbury Road, where a handful of 1960s high-rise towers face the bay. The former Gatwick Hotel on Canterbury Road was famously renovated by The Block into apartments. Owner-occupancy here runs at nearly 47%, significantly higher than St Kilda proper. It feels more like Albert Park or Middle Park than St Kilda.
The heritage houses on Mary Street, Loch Street, York Street, and Deakin Street have front-door access with low fences: straightforward pickups. The high-rise towers on Beaconsfield Parade and Canterbury Road need intercom entry, older security systems rather than modern concierge, so include your building and unit details when booking.
